Benkirane's Stance on Jewish Prayers in Marrakech: A Provocation to Moroccans

Benkirane Condemns Jewish Prayers as Provocation

In a recent statement, Abdelilah Benkirane, the Secretary-General of the Justice and Development Party, expressed his concerns regarding the Jewish prayers conducted by a group of Haredi Jews in front of Bab Doukkala, Marrakech. Following several days of silence on the matter, Benkirane labeled the act as a "provocation" to the sentiments of Moroccan citizens. During a gathering with residents in Sebt Gzoula, located in Safi province, on April 26, he articulated that the issue transcends the mere act of prayer; it is deeply rooted in the historical and cultural sensitivities surrounding Jerusalem, particularly Al-Quds Al-Sharif.

Benkirane explained that the event evoked memories of similar prayers conducted at holy sites in Israel, leading many Moroccans to draw uncomfortable comparisons. He emphasized that the underlying problem lies not in the prayers themselves but in the perceived provocation, which he believes should not have been permitted in the first place. He urged that while individuals are free to pray, such activities should be confined to their designated places of worship to maintain peace and respect within the local community.

The politician further called for an investigation into the authorization of the gathering, warning that such provocations could incite discord among the populace. He firmly stated that this action is unacceptable and reiterated that it serves as a reminder of the ongoing tensions in Al-Quds Al-Sharif, a city that Moroccans hold dear as an integral part of their heritage.
