Bilal Mermeid Highlights Festival Overload, Advocates for Quality Over Quantity

Assessing the State of Film Festivals in Morocco

In a recent discussion on the "Work Session" program aired on Hespress platforms, renowned critic and journalist Bilal Mermeid provided a critical overview of the current landscape of film festivals in Morocco, specifically focusing on the National Film Festival in Tangier and the Marrakech International Film Festival. Mermeid expressed concerns regarding the overwhelming number of film festivals in Morocco, which exceeds fifty, while the annual film production rarely surpasses twenty-five films. He argues that the emphasis should shift towards establishing around twenty meaningful festivals that are adequately funded and rigorously monitored for their presentation standards.

Mermeid's commentary extended to the National Film Festival in Tangier, where he engaged with the ongoing debate about the proposal to rotate the festival among various Moroccan cities. He expressed that while rotation might seem appealing, it is not necessarily the optimal solution. Instead, he believes that maintaining the festival's presence in Tangier could foster a deeper connection with the venues and create a substantial visual archive of consecutive editions. Furthermore, he highlighted the need for organizational improvements, recommending a shift of the festival's timing to March, following the Berlin Festival, to avoid clashing with international schedules, rather than holding it in October, which complicates the inclusion of new productions.

Enhancing the Quality and Prestige of Film Festivals

Mermeid also pointed out the disorganization present in the closing ceremony of the Tangier festival, where numerous awards are distributed in a single night, leading to confusion. He proposed that parallel awards be given in the days leading up to the closing night, similar to the Cannes Film Festival, allowing the final ceremony to focus solely on the official award winners. He stressed the importance of ensuring that the competition reflects the true quality of Moroccan cinema, moving away from the idea of mere participation and celebrating actual accomplishments.

Transitioning to the Marrakech International Film Festival, Mermeid lauded it as an exemplary showcase of Moroccan cinema on the global stage. He acknowledged the festival's solid foundations and its esteemed reputation, which attracts international stars and filmmakers, including Robert De Niro and Jodie Foster, to attend without hesitation. Despite this success, he urged for further efforts to enhance the festival's leadership by focusing on attracting premiere screenings of African and Arab films and nurturing new talents to launch their global careers. He cited the notable journey of acclaimed director Cristian Mungiu, who began his rise at the Marrakech festival.

Concluding his thoughts, Mermeid asserted that no other festival in the Arab world possesses the unique qualities and atmosphere that Marrakech offers, positioning it as a significant international event. He called for continued diligence in building upon the achievements of the festival to ensure its ongoing success.
