Bologna University Rallies for Justice Following Tragic Death of Abderrahim Fakir
In the wake of the tragic death of Moroccan-Italian national Abderrahim Fakir during a police operation in Bologna on July 19, a wave of calls for justice has surged within the university community. Prior to this event, on September 11, a pivotal meeting is scheduled at the Làbas center, featuring Fabio Anselmo, the lawyer representing Fakir’s family, alongside Senator Ilaria Cucchi. These university initiatives are seen as an extension of the grassroots mobilization that has gained momentum throughout the city following Fakir's untimely demise. The September 12 gathering will include a series of workshops, discussions, and debates organized by the Social Intervention Platform, the Interprofessional Union of Self-Organized Workers (Sì Cobas), and various migrant communities.
The organizers are calling for "justice and truth," condemning what they describe as a violent death resulting from an abuse of power, which was tragically captured on film. They emphasize the necessity to maintain this mobilization and to combat systemic racism and police violence. However, this initiative has encountered resistance from the far-right Fratelli d’Italia party, led by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. MEP Stefano Cavedagna, representing the party, has publicly called for actions to thwart this mobilization.
