Bouanou Urges Closure of the Akhannouch Government Era
Abdellah Bouanou, the head of the Justice and Development Party's parliamentary group, has emphatically stated that the upcoming electoral process must serve as a decisive turning point away from the current government under Aziz Akhannouch. He expressed that the experiences endured since the formation of this government, which began on September 8, 2021, must come to an end. During a speech at a rally organized by the National Union of Labor in Morocco on May 1 in the city of Fes, Bouanou underscored the urgent necessity for Morocco to reinforce genuine democracy and uphold democratic choices. He emphasized that progress—whether social, economic, or international—cannot be achieved without a solid democratic foundation. Furthermore, he stated, "There can be no development without democracy, nor can there be democracy without political parties, and certainly, there can be no advancement without the dignity of the working class, which serves as the backbone of society."
Critique of Government's Performance and Timing of Accountability
Bouanou also criticized the government's timing in presenting its performance report, which he referred to as a "report card"—suggesting that it contradicts democratic norms. He argued that it would have been more prudent to wait until the end of the government's term, questioning the implications of presenting such a report merely six months before the elections. He posed the rhetorical question: "Has the government achieved everything, or has it accomplished nothing?" leaning towards the latter hypothesis. He noted that the government has effectively morphed into a caretaker administration since April 2024, highlighting that significant responsibilities have been stripped from the Prime Minister and handed to the Minister of Interior, including the national livestock census and regional development programs. Bouanou's analysis indicates a troubling inability of the current government to manage critical national issues, raising concerns about its capability as the country approaches a pivotal electoral moment.
