Insights from the Marrakech Platform Meeting
The Moroccan Foreign Minister, Nasser Bourita, recently held discussions with Alexander Zuev, the Acting Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism. This significant dialogue took place during the fifth edition of the High-Level Meeting of African Heads of Counter-Terrorism Agencies and Security, commonly referred to as the Marrakech Platform. The event commenced in El Jadida, showcasing a multi-faceted approach to addressing security challenges across the African continent.
This two-day meeting gathered a wide array of security actors, featuring participation from approximately forty African intelligence and security services, accompanied by nearly ninety delegations from the Middle East, Europe, America, and Asia, who attended as observers. Additionally, representatives from regional institutions affiliated with the United Nations were actively involved in the discussions, underscoring the collaborative effort to enhance security measures.
Addressing Evolving Security Threats
The timing of this edition is particularly critical, as it occurs amidst ongoing and evolving terrorist threats on the African continent. This reality emphasizes the need for continued initiatives like the Marrakech Platform, which builds upon previous gatherings held in Marrakech (2022), Tangier (2023), Fez (2024), and Agadir (2025). The growing interest from African nations and international partners reaffirms the central role this meeting plays in fostering a strategic environment for exchanging expertise, strengthening regional cooperation, and identifying key priorities for developing counter-terrorism capabilities in Africa.
