Bourita Highlights Mohammed VI's Vision to Combat Terrorism and Security Threats in Africa

Morocco's Commitment to African Security and Stability

Nasser Bourita, the Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, reaffirmed the nation’s strong commitment to enhancing security and stability across Africa during the fifth high-level meeting of African security and counter-terrorism agency heads, held in El Jadida. This meeting, part of the Marrakech Platform, was co-chaired by Morocco and the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism. Bourita emphasized the significant challenges posed by expanding terrorism and regional conflicts, particularly highlighting the connections between terrorist groups, separatist movements, and transnational crime. He noted that the recent technological advancements and the rise of artificial intelligence have introduced new challenges that require urgent attention.

In his address, Bourita articulated the royal vision of King Mohammed VI, which encompasses a comprehensive framework aimed at addressing the realities of Africa. He stressed that Morocco views Africa not merely as a neighboring continent or a diplomatic option but as an integral part of its identity, geography, and history. This perspective reinforces the notion that Morocco’s security is inextricably linked to the stability and development of the African continent as a whole.

Afro-Optimism: A Path Forward

Bourita also introduced the concept of 'Afro-optimism,' which serves as a guiding principle for Morocco's actions in Africa. He expressed a strong belief that despite the ongoing security challenges, Africa is poised for a prosperous future, endowed with the resources and ingenuity needed to overcome its obstacles. This optimism underpins Morocco's proactive stance in counter-terrorism efforts, which Bourita described as a historical responsibility rather than a choice. He asserted that Morocco's involvement in combating terrorism is essential for the security of its own environment and the broader African context.

The Marrakech Platform, launched in 2022, aims to unite African security agency leaders and international partners to enhance cooperation against common threats. This latest gathering continues a series of meetings held in previous years in various Moroccan cities, including Marrakech, Tangier, Fez, and Agadir. These forums are crucial for exchanging experiences and strengthening capabilities across the continent.
