Brazilian Socialist Youth Union's 23rd Congress Affirms Solidarity with Sahrawi People

Solidarity with the Sahrawi Cause

In a significant display of international solidarity, the 23rd National Congress of the Brazilian Socialist Youth Union (UJS) took place in Rio de Janeiro from July 2 to 5, 2026. The congress culminated in a political declaration that underscored unwavering support for the Sahrawi people and their legitimate struggle against the Moroccan occupation, which is characterized as Africa's last colony. This gathering of youth leaders from across the globe served as a platform to amplify the voices of the Sahrawi people, drawing attention to their ongoing quest for freedom and independence.

The presence of Mr. Ahmed Moulay Ali, the representative of the Polisario Front in Brazil, was particularly notable as it provided an invaluable opportunity to discuss the latest developments in the Sahrawi struggle. Throughout the event, extensive discussions were held with various delegations and prominent figures, all expressing their resolute backing for the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination, a fundamental principle that resonates deeply within the global youth community.

Call for Global Recognition and Action

The final declaration of the congress reflected the UJS's long-standing commitment to oppose warfare and its catastrophic effects on humanity. It articulated robust support for Sahrawi youth and citizens who have endured systematic Moroccan colonial policies since 1975, policies that are described as tantamount to genocide. The congress urged youth organizations and political parties worldwide to vocally support the Sahrawi cause, emphasizing that recognizing the Sahrawi state is essential for achieving stability, peace, and justice across North Africa.

Moreover, the Brazilian Socialist Youth Union called upon governments globally, with a particular emphasis on the Brazilian government, to officially recognize the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic as a sovereign state and advocate for its future membership in the United Nations. This appeal aligns with international law, the decisions of the International Court of Justice, and the positions endorsed by both African and European courts, as well as the BRICS nations.

In its declaration, the congress vehemently condemned the grave human rights violations perpetrated by occupying forces against Sahrawi civilians in the territories under Moroccan control. It demanded the immediate and unconditional release of all Sahrawi political prisoners languishing in Moroccan jails. Furthermore, the statement reiterated its urgent call for the United Nations to take decisive action by organizing a free, fair, and transparent referendum, thereby ensuring the Sahrawi people's inalienable right to self-determination and independence.
