Leon Baptiste, a prominent British Athletics coach, has reportedly been incarcerated in a Marrakech prison after being out of contact for nearly two months. The 41-year-old coach, who is known for mentoring several elite athletes, traveled to Morocco for a weekend getaway with friends. Since then, his athletes and officials from UK Athletics, who employ him as a consultant based in Loughborough, have been unable to reach him, with messages sent to his phone remaining unanswered.
The Moroccan Ministry of Justice has clarified the situation, asserting that Mr. Baptiste did not vanish or lose contact with his acquaintances. Instead, he is currently serving a custodial sentence at a local prison in Marrakech, having been convicted in connection with a misdemeanour case by the appropriate judicial authorities.
In response to the situation, a spokesperson from the UK Foreign Office confirmed that they are providing support to the detained British national and are in communication with Moroccan officials regarding his case. The developments surrounding Baptiste's detention have raised concerns among his colleagues and the athletics community, who are keen to understand the circumstances that led to his current legal troubles.
