A Grieving Widow Seeks Justice Following Hotel Tragedy
A British widow is taking legal action against a luxury hotel in Marrakech following the tragic death of her husband, who perished in a fire at the hotel’s spa. Rachel Barnes is demanding over £500,000 in damages, arguing that negligence on the part of the hotel contributed to her husband's untimely death. The incident, which occurred in March 2023 during a business trip, also claimed the life of a hotel employee, highlighting the severe consequences of the fire that erupted in the spa area.
According to legal documents, Rachel alleges that critical safety measures at the hotel were severely inadequate. She claims that the fire alarms and smoke detection systems were malfunctioning, and that the emergency evacuation procedures were poorly implemented. Furthermore, she states that the surveillance cameras failed to provide adequate coverage, and the fire-fighting equipment was insufficient for such an emergency. In her complaint, Rachel also points out that the construction materials used in the spa were not fire-resistant and that emergency services were contacted too late to prevent the loss of life.
This lawsuit comes on the heels of a UK investigation, which, in October 2025, ruled her husband’s death as an "accidental" death due to the thick smoke that hampered rescue operations. The hotel operator has refuted all allegations of negligence, asserting that the fire began in the sauna and that their staff acted quickly to alert authorities and assist guests in evacuating safely. They maintain that the hotel complied with Moroccan safety regulations, boasting a functioning alarm system, emergency lighting, operational surveillance cameras, and multiple fire extinguishers in place. As of now, no court date has been set for the proceedings.
