Cabo Verde's Commitment to Morocco's Territorial Integrity
On September 21, 2026, during a significant meeting in New York, Manuel Augusto Lima Amante da Rosa, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Defense of Cabo Verde, reaffirmed his country's unwavering support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco, encompassing the Sahara region. This endorsement highlights Cabo Verde's commitment to Morocco's autonomy plan, which is viewed as the sole viable solution to the ongoing territorial dispute. The announcement came following a joint statement issued after discussions between Minister Lima Amante da Rosa and Nasser Bourita, Morocco's Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Living Abroad, on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
The Cabo Verdean side also expressed its appreciation for the recent adoption by the UN Security Council of Resolution 2797 concerning the Moroccan Sahara, underscoring the growing international consensus around this issue. In the same statement, Minister Lima Amante da Rosa praised the proactive international approach championed by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, which supports both the autonomy plan and Morocco's sovereignty over its Sahara territory.
Strengthening Bilateral Relations and Future Collaborations
Minister Nasser Bourita, in turn, thanked his Cabo Verdean counterpart for the consistent and firm support of Cabo Verde regarding the Moroccan claim to the Sahara. This diplomatic rapport was further strengthened by the opening of the Cabo Verdean General Consulate in Dakhla in August 2022, which signifies a commitment to enhancing bilateral ties. During their discussions, both ministers reiterated their dedication to fostering a cooperative relationship based on friendship, solidarity, and mutual benefits. They expressed intentions to enhance partnerships across various sectors, including health, tourism, maritime fishing, agriculture, blue economy, and energy transition.
Moreover, they agreed to convene the third session of the Joint Cooperation Commission in the first quarter of 2027. This session aims to identify new partnership opportunities and inject renewed momentum into their cooperative endeavors. Recognizing the Royal initiatives aimed at the development and emergence of Africa, the Cabo Verdean delegation honored King Mohammed VI's leadership and acknowledged the Royal initiatives promoting peace, stability, and shared prosperity across the continent, particularly the Atlantic African States initiative and the Royal initiative facilitating Sahel countries' access to the Atlantic Ocean.
