CAF Considers Morocco as a Contingency Option for AFCON 2027

Concerns and Urgency Surrounding AFCON 2027

As the tournament date approaches, scheduled for June 19 to July 17, 2027, anxiety within CAF has intensified. A recent inspection committee was dispatched to the three countries to assess the progress of the necessary preparations, with only nine months remaining until the competition begins. Despite official statements from CAF aiming to convey reassurance, remarks from its President, Patrice Motsepe, have hinted at underlying worries. During a recent tour in East Africa, he emphasized that there were no alternative plans for holding the tournament elsewhere, stating, "There is no backup plan, no third option, and there will never be one." Nevertheless, he acknowledged that the situation is not entirely reassuring, highlighting the urgency of the preparations given the proximity of the event.

While CAF insists that there is no intention to relocate AFCON 2027, the ongoing concerns keep the possibility open. The final evaluation regarding the tournament's location is set to take place in January. Should the situation necessitate a change in hosting arrangements, Morocco, with its modern sports infrastructure and extensive experience in organizing major football events, remains a natural candidate for consideration. Nonetheless, as of now, there has been no formal decision to move AFCON 2027 from East Africa.
