CAF Inter-Club Competitions: Zamalek and Other Giants Advance to Semifinals

Zamalek and Other Clubs Shine in CAF Competitions

In a thrilling display of football, Zamalek, USM Alger, and Mamelodi Sundowns emerged victorious, securing their spots in the semifinals of the CAF inter-club competitions this past Sunday. Zamalek, the sole Egyptian representative remaining in the Confederation Cup, continued their campaign after a resilient performance against Otoho d'Oyo. Following a tightly contested first leg that ended in a 1-1 draw, Zamalek showcased their strength at home, clinching a 2-1 victory in the second leg, which allowed them to progress with an aggregate score of 3-2.

While Zamalek celebrated their advancement, the competition was not without surprises. In a dramatic all-Moroccan encounter, Olympique de Safi managed to stun the giants Wydad Casablanca by advancing on the away goals rule after a nail-biting tie that concluded with a 3-3 aggregate score. The two teams fought hard, sharing a 1-1 draw in the first leg and then playing to a 2-2 stalemate in the second leg at Wydad's home ground, ultimately allowing Olympique de Safi to move forward.

Turning to Algeria, USM Alger also secured their place in the semifinals, edging out Maniema Union with a narrow 1-0 victory in the second leg, thus progressing on the away goals rule after the aggregate score stood at 2-2. This victory sets up an enticing semifinal matchup for USM Alger against Olympique de Safi next month, while Zamalek is set to face Algeria's CR Belouizdad.

Moroccan Clubs Maintain Strong Presence

The Moroccan clubs continued to demonstrate their dominance in continental football, particularly in the Champions League, where RS Berkane joined AS FAR Rabat in the semifinals. Berkane secured their place by defeating Al Hilal Omdurman 1-0 in the second leg, completing the tie with a 2-1 aggregate score. Meanwhile, despite suffering a 2-0 defeat to Stade Malien in Mali, Mamelodi Sundowns advanced to the semifinals due to their commanding 3-0 lead from the first leg, resulting in a final aggregate of 3-2. Consequently, Sundowns will now prepare to take on the formidable Esperance de Tunis, while Berkane and AS FAR Rabat will face off in an exciting all-Moroccan semifinal clash.
