CAF Strips Senegal of Africa Cup Title, Declares Morocco Champion After Controversial Final

The recent Africa Cup of Nations final, which took place in January, has led to significant repercussions following a scandalous conclusion. The Appeals Court of the African Football Confederation (CAF) made the decision to strip Senegal of their title after they were defeated by Morocco 1-0 in the final match held in Rabat, which went into extra time. In a dramatic turn of events, the Senegalese team left the pitch in protest against a controversial penalty decision during stoppage time, a move that the CAF interpreted as a forfeit, resulting in a 3-0 victory awarded to Morocco.

Morocco, the host nation, contested their loss in the final, which was marred by tumult and protests on January 18. The CAF’s Disciplinary Committee accepted their appeal, which was announced on Tuesday. This committee’s ruling contradicted an earlier decision by the CAF, which had imposed several fines but had left the match result unchanged. Senegal's coach, Pape Thiaw, had only received a five-match ban and a fine of $100,000 for urging his players to leave the field following the disputed penalty call.

The Appeals Court ruled that Senegal's exit from the field constituted a forfeiture, as per Article 82 of the Africa Cup regulations, thereby confirming Morocco's victory. Initially, the governing body had determined that Senegal had returned to the field, thus suggesting that the criteria for a forfeit were not met. The source of contention was a controversial penalty awarded to Morocco late in the match, which led to the mass exit of Senegal's players. Despite the turmoil, Brahim Diaz missed the penalty when play resumed, and Pape Gueye later scored the winning goal for Senegal during extra time.
