International Conference on Ancestral Oasis Heritage
The Gdourt Association for Solidarity is proud to announce its upcoming international conference titled "Ancestral Oasis Heritage: What Cultural and Social Dynamics?" scheduled for October 12-14 and 16, 2026, at the Tafraoute Center in Tiznit, Morocco.
When contemplating oases, it is essential to recognize that this term encompasses more than just a picturesque landscape of palm trees surrounding a water source; it represents a complex lifestyle cultivated through pragmatic negotiations with the environment. Oases are not merely romanticized settings depicted in the works of colonial explorers but are vibrant ecosystems that have evolved to meet both vital and secondary needs of their inhabitants. They embody a wealth of knowledge aimed at defending against natural adversities and the incursions of nomadic tribes, showcasing architectural brilliance through the construction of kasbahs and ksours, fortified with walls and watchtowers to deter intruders. Moreover, the social organization within these communities is deeply rooted in rational customs and a rich symbolic culture that gives meaning to the lived experiences of their people.
Engaging with the concept of the oasis allows us to revitalize this way of life, not by nostalgically clinging to the past, but by drawing lessons from ancient practices to remedy the ailments of our contemporary era. Achieving this goal necessitates collaboration among researchers interested in this unique ecosystem and among the local inhabitants committed to rehabilitating and safeguarding their environment from emerging threats.
Contributors are encouraged to explore the following key themes, although any proposal related to the conference's overarching questions will be accepted:
- The oasis as a complex and balanced lifestyle;
- The oasis as a structured social organization;
- The rich immaterial, cultural, and architectural heritage filled with symbolism;
- Oasis ecosystems and intelligent solutions to natural challenges;
- The representation of oases in history and literature;
- Sociological and anthropological issues surrounding oases;
