CAN 2025: Was the Senegal vs Morocco Final Manipulated?

Controversy Surrounding the CAN 2025 Final

The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) final held earlier this year has been mired in controversy and uncertainty, leaving fans and players alike questioning the integrity of the match. Senegal emerged victorious on the pitch with a 1-0 win against Morocco; however, the aftermath of the game has cast a long shadow over the result. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) declared Morocco the winners based on a decision made after several incidents occurred in the closing minutes of regulation time. Reports indicate that several Senegalese players left the field after a controversial penalty was awarded to the Moroccan team, leading to a heated dispute regarding the legitimacy of the game.

Now, the final decision regarding the match rests with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which has been petitioned by the Senegalese side following the CAF's ruling. Despite the uncertainty surrounding the outcome, Senegalese player Iliman Ndiaye remains steadfast in his belief that they are the rightful champions. In a recent interview with France Football, he stated, "I feel like an African champion, regardless of the decision made by the authorities. It is the truth of the field that should prevail, and it was Senegal that won on the pitch."

Strange Refereeing Decisions Spark Doubts

Ndiaye's conviction is further fueled by his perception that the match was compromised from the outset. He expressed his concerns, noting, "I had doubts about the match's proceedings, especially with strange occurrences during the pre-match warm-up, where players were feeling unwell. I found myself questioning the integrity of the game. From the very first minutes, I sensed unusual refereeing decisions." He pointed to a particularly surreal sequence at the end of regulation time that included a disallowed goal for Senegal and a seemingly unjustified penalty awarded to Morocco, igniting feelings of injustice among the Senegalese players.

In the heat of the moment, Ndiaye recounted the frustration felt by his teammates, which momentarily led them to leave the field. However, he acknowledged that reason prevailed when team leader Sadio Mané urged them to return to the pitch, highlighting their determination to overcome the adversity. "When Brahim missed his penalty, we all looked at each other and thought, 'It's the justice of God that has spoken. We can't lose now.' And as we know, the rest is history."
