Major Waste Management Initiative in Casablanca
Casablanca is on the brink of a groundbreaking project aimed at the treatment and valorization of household waste. In early August, a consortium comprising Kanadevia Inova, Nareva, and Itochu officially signed a concession agreement with the Municipality of Casablanca, along with power purchase agreements with the Regional Multi-Service Company (SRM) Casablanca-Settat and the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE). These agreements pave the way for the commencement of preparatory works for this ambitious initiative.
In a statement released on August 4, 2026, Kanadevia Inova announced that electricity purchase contracts had been finalized with both SRM Casablanca-Settat and ONEE. This milestone signifies the tangible launch of what will become Morocco's first integrated energy recovery infrastructure for waste management.
Following these agreements, the partners will initiate the operational phases of the project, which include the Limited Notice to Proceed and the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) activities, as detailed by the consortium. Within this venture, Nareva serves as the principal investor and Moroccan partner, while Itochu from Japan contributes its industrial expertise. Kanadevia Inova will manage the engineering, procurement, construction, operational support, long-term maintenance, and part of the financing for the facility.
Transforming Waste into Energy
This innovative project will exclusively process household waste from Greater Casablanca, a metropolitan area with over 4.2 million residents. The facility is designed to handle approximately 1.5 million tons of waste annually, with an impressive goal of recovering nearly 80% of the materials, thereby significantly reducing landfill reliance. The plant will have an installed capacity of about 126 MW of base electricity, supplemented by a 50 MW photovoltaic solar power plant and a landfill gas recovery system generating 4 MW. Its estimated annual production is close to one terawatt-hour (TWh), sufficient to power nearly one million residents while supporting the growing national electricity demand and the Kingdom's energy transition.
Ultimately, the project is expected to create 140 skilled jobs at the site. Meanwhile, over the next three and a half years, approximately 1,240 workers will be involved in the construction phase, in addition to around 300 jobs related to ancillary infrastructure.
