Revitalizing Casablanca's Running Scene
In a recent press conference organized by Casablanca Events & Animation, the much-anticipated return of the 10KM International by WeCasablanca was announced, scheduled for June 6, 2027. This event aims to enhance the allure of the race for both Moroccan and international runners while promoting the cultural and social vibrancy of Casablanca. The General Director of Casablanca Events & Animation, Mohamed Jouahri, highlighted that this meeting serves as a platform to review the qualitative and quantitative outcomes of the 2026 edition, expressing satisfaction with the results, particularly in terms of participation.
The race witnessed an enthusiastic turnout, attracting over 16,000 runners, with participants hailing from more than sixty nationalities, showcasing its international appeal. Jouahri emphasized that this global participation not only elevates the profile of Casablanca but also aims to familiarize visitors with the city's rich heritage, especially during the race week. Mustapha Benslimane, the technical director of the race, echoed this sentiment, noting the impressive caliber of participants in the 2026 edition, which included athletes who have excelled at Mediterranean Games and World Championships.
Showcasing Athletic Excellence
During the press conference, the previous edition's achievements were also highlighted, with 16,254 participants representing 63 nationalities, including nearly 1,000 international runners. The event was not only a display of athletic prowess but also a celebration of community spirit as the main streets of Casablanca came alive with the race's vibrant atmosphere. Notably, Moroccan runner Hicham Ouladha clinched victory in the men's category with a time of 27:59, followed closely by Yassine El Allami and Ethiopian athlete Biniyam Melak. In the women's race, Ethiopian Chane Fentaya Adane secured first place, with Moroccan Fatima Zahra Birdaha finishing strong.
The 10KM International by WeCasablanca is becoming a significant stepping stone for athletes aiming to excel on the international stage. For instance, Likina Amebaw, the 2025 champion with a time of 29:55, achieved a remarkable feat by winning the World 5K Road title in Copenhagen in 14:41 on September 19, 2026. Furthermore, Fatima Zahra Birdaha, who placed second in the 2026 edition, earned a gold medal in the 5,000m at the Mediterranean Games in Taranto with a personal best of 15:07:40, also triumphing in the half marathon to secure two Mediterranean titles. Similarly, Hicham Ouladha earned a bronze medal in the 10,000m at the same Games, showcasing the race's commitment to providing athletes with a high-level competitive platform.
This year’s event also marked the signing of three partnership agreements with notable races such as the 10KM Valencia Ibercaja by Kiprun, 10KM International de Dchira-Laâyoune, and 10KM International de Dakhla. These collaborations aim to foster knowledge sharing, enhance cooperation among organizers, and promote the development of road races both in Morocco and on an international scale. The Village of the 10KM International by Casablanca will serve as a vibrant hub for participants, partners, and the public, featuring a program filled with activities, exhibitions, and opportunities for interaction, alongside a streamlined, digital registration and bib collection process.
For the 2027 edition, the officially certified course from 2026 will be reused, allowing participants to experience a route that traverses the main arteries of Casablanca, meeting international standards for road racing. Through this upcoming edition, Casablanca Events & Animation aims to continue elevating the stature of the 10KM International by WeCasablanca, boosting its appeal to both Moroccan and international runners, and establishing Casablanca as a premier destination for road racing.
