The Transformation of Hay Mohammadi's Historic Slaughterhouse
In a significant development during its ordinary session in May 2026, the Casablanca Municipal Council approved the framework necessary for the comprehensive rehabilitation of the former slaughterhouses, a site that holds a prominent place in the collective memory of Hay Mohammadi. Located at the heart of this historic district, the former Casablanca slaughterhouse, colloquially known as 'Batouar,' is poised to undergo a monumental transformation. Originally constructed in 1922 by architect Georges-Louis Lebon, this sprawling site spans over five hectares, featuring a raw aesthetic that combines reinforced concrete with Art Deco elements.
Once considered a model of technological modernity in Africa, this industrial complex was designated a historical monument in Morocco in 2003, just one year after its permanent closure. The current rehabilitation and valorization project represents one of the key priorities in preserving the historical memory of the metropolis. During the council meeting held on May 7, an institutional framework was established through a partnership involving the Casablanca municipality, the Ministry of the Interior via the General Directorate of Local Authorities, the Wilaya of the region, and the Casablanca-Settat region.
Financially, a total budget of 160 million MAD has been allocated for the restoration and enhancement of this industrial architecture site. The technical implementation and operational management of this budget have been entrusted to the local development company (SDL) Casablanca Patrimoine, which is responsible for transforming this industrial site into a modern space while meticulously preserving its original architecture.
This decision aims to sustain the civic momentum initiated in 2009 by the collective 'La Fabrique culturelle,' which rescued the site from obscurity by installing spaces dedicated to street art, performing arts, and underground music. The current project envisions structuring this dynamic by creating artist residences, exhibition galleries, and permanent workspaces for local associations. The central goal is to transform this early 20th-century gem into a renowned cultural and heritage hub on an international scale. Beyond restoring the structures, the project aims to establish a vibrant environment for creators through artist residencies, exhibition galleries, and permanent workspaces for local associations.
A major innovation discussed during this session involves designating part of the land or buildings on the site to accommodate the future headquarters of the Regional Chamber of Crafts of Casablanca-Settat. Elected officials highlighted the strategic relevance of this choice, as it addresses the lack of suitable administrative facilities for this regional body while creating a natural synergy between the built heritage of the slaughterhouses and Moroccan craftsmanship.
This institutional setup is perceived as an economic stimulation lever, ensuring regular site attendance beyond cultural events alone.
