Catalonian Separatist Party Seeks Dialogue with Morocco on Ceuta and Melilla
The Catalonian separatist party, "Together for Catalonia," has recently made attempts to establish communication channels with the Moroccan government to express its support for Morocco's stance regarding the cities of Ceuta and Melilla. Despite these efforts, sources within the party indicate that no direct contact has been made with Moroccan officials.
According to a report by the Spanish newspaper "La Saha," credible sources from "Together for Catalonia" revealed that the party leadership sought to communicate with Moroccan representatives to convey its political stance favoring Morocco in the context of Ceuta and Melilla. The party also aimed to initiate a dialogue, whether directly or through unofficial channels; however, these attempts have not received any response from the Moroccan side.
This situation brings to light previous statements made by party leaders, most notably Carles Puigdemont, the former president of the Catalonian government. During the Ceuta crisis in May 2021, Puigdemont referred to the two cities as "African cities," coinciding with his criticism of Madrid's handling of the situation and his support for Morocco's right to raise the issue of the two cities. Despite this alignment with Morocco's position, no formal channels of communication have been established between Rabat and the Catalonian separatist movement.
The Moroccan government's consistent position on the Catalonian issue has been clear, as Morocco had previously announced in 2017 its rejection of the unilateral independence process of Catalonia and reiterated its support for Spain's sovereignty, national unity, and territorial integrity. This stance underscores that Morocco has not leveraged its disagreements with Madrid as a means to support separatist movements within Spain, particularly as some political and media circles in Spain continue to advocate for separatist ideas that threaten the territorial integrity of Morocco.
