Celebrate APIDA and SWANA Heritage Month at Colorado State University

Throughout the month of April, Colorado State University (CSU) is proudly celebrating APIDA (Asian Pacific Islander Desi American) and SWANA (Southwest Asian and North African) Heritage Month. This vibrant celebration commenced on April 1 and is packed with a diverse array of activities, including engaging talks, interactive workshops, and unique culinary experiences designed to foster cultural appreciation and connection among the CSU community.

The month-long festivities are open to all members of the CSU community and feature over a dozen exciting attractions that highlight the rich heritage and contributions of Asian Pacific Islanders, Desi Americans, Southwest Asians, and North Africans. For those looking to stay updated on the various events, including the highly anticipated keynote address, the Asian Pacific American Cultural Center website serves as an excellent resource.

This year's programming includes creative events such as Moroccan lantern decorating, film screenings, and a diverse menu at the Aspen Grille. Notably, the events place a strong emphasis on movement and care practices, incorporating storytelling, wellness, and cultural connection into the mix. The celebration began with a session focused on healing through writing and storytelling, held at the Lory Student Center University Ballroom, and will continue with a board game experience on April 7 where participants can sample games from Southeast Asia and learn about their cultural significance.

On April 8, attendees will have the chance to craft Moroccan lanterns at the APACC offices (located in LSC 333). These beautifully designed lanterns, often adorned with intricate glass paint patterns, symbolize light and guidance, particularly during Ramadan. Students are invited to create their own motifs on glass jars, which allows them to express their cultural identity through this artistic endeavor.

The month will also feature two film screenings. The first, scheduled for April 10, will present 'Black Water with Short Farfour: A War Diary from Gaza,' as part of the annual ACT Human Rights Film Festival. Following that, on April 17, the documentary 'Chinatown Rising' will be screened, chronicling the Asian American Movement, accompanied by a panel discussion and a virtual conversation with the film’s director.

In addition to these events, the Aspen Grille will celebrate the month with a weekly sandwich special, featuring flavors such as butter chicken, katsu, smashed falafel pita, and banh mi. Sweet Sinsations will also join in the festivities by offering a limited-time selection of drinks inspired by the cuisines of APIDA and SWANA.
