Commemorating 250 Years of Friendship Between the United States and Morocco
On June 9, 2026, the United States Embassy in Rabat hosted a grand celebration to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence, held for the first time at the historic Chellah site. This prestigious event gathered high-ranking Moroccan officials, diplomats, and partners from both the public and private sectors, highlighting nearly two and a half centuries of friendship and cooperation between the United States and the Kingdom of Morocco, from Tangier to Dakhla. Morocco was the first country to recognize the independence of the United States, establishing one of the oldest diplomatic relations in American history.
The celebration underscored the strength of the bilateral partnership, which spans various domains including diplomacy, security, trade, and investment. It also showcased the growing collaboration in innovation, infrastructure, and economic development, emphasizing the commitment to a future-oriented partnership. The Embassy highlighted the enduring presence of the United States in Morocco, from the American Legation in Tangier, the oldest diplomatic property in the world, to the recently inaugurated U.S. Consulate General in Casablanca. This reflects a shared commitment to advancing cooperation and mutual interests.
Ambassador Duke Buchan III, during his speech, stated: "As we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States, we also honor a partnership deeply rooted in history, strengthened by trust, and clearly focused on the next 250 years." He further emphasized the importance of this partnership in enhancing economic and human ties between the two nations, particularly through initiatives that align with the vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, aiming to position the Moroccan Sahara as a hub for transatlantic partnerships and opportunities.
This momentous occasion coincides with Morocco's participation in the World Cup hosted in the United States, providing yet another compelling example of the enduring human connections that continue to thrive between the two nations.
