Casablanca: A Pillar of Arthouse Cinema in Nuremberg

The Casablanca cinema in Nuremberg has recently marked a significant milestone, celebrating its 50th anniversary. This iconic venue has been under the stewardship of Matthias Damm and the CASA e.V. association for the past 17 years, embodying their motto of "Cinema with Courage." The celebration featured guest speaker Christian Bräuer, the chairman of AG-Kino, who reminisced about his childhood experiences in Nuremberg, proudly noting that Casa was one of the cinemas that shaped his formative years.

Founded in 1976 by Wolfram Weber and his brothers, the Casablanca brought arthouse cinema to Nuremberg and has been a cornerstone of the community throughout its history. Notably, in 1995, Weber opened the Cinecittà multiplex, which played a crucial role in keeping large cinema chains at bay and transforming Cinecittà into one of the most successful large cinemas in Germany, as well as a vibrant hub within the city.

Resilience Through Challenges

Despite facing challenges such as piracy and the high costs associated with digitalization, which threatened to close many small city-center cinemas, the Casa endured a brief closure in 2009. Its survival can be attributed to the dedicated support from the local community and the passionate leadership of CASA e.V., under Matthias Damm's guidance. The cinema successfully navigated the digital transition and has regained and expanded its audience through a thoughtfully curated programming strategy. By fostering strong connections with its audience and introducing engaging film series, the Casablanca continues to thrive and evolve.
