Celebrating 900 Years of Ibn Rushd: A Global Poetry Anthology

A Literary Tribute to Ibn Rushd

As we commemorate the 900th anniversary of the birth of the eminent philosopher Ibn Rushd, also known as Averroes, a significant literary initiative has emerged, involving the participation of 120 poets from fourteen countries. This remarkable event aims to celebrate the contributions and enduring impact of the philosopher from Córdoba and Marrakech, showcasing the talents of poets from the Maghreb region and beyond. The anthology, described by participant Abdul Aziz Koukass as an international literary endeavor, seeks to honor the legacy of Abu Walid Muhammad Ibn Ahmad Ibn Rushd, one of the most prominent figures to arise from Andalusian civilization.

The initiative, which is set to unfold through a series of published works, translations by nine different translators, and various digital platforms, aims to establish a space for cultural and linguistic exchange, drawing inspiration from the universal philosophical heritage of the great sage from Córdoba. The anthology will kick off with poetry selections presented in Córdoba, followed by events in Marrakech, Fez, and Madrid during the months of September and November.

Koukass elaborated on how the publication of this work has been entrusted to the esteemed Almuzara publishing house, receiving support from several key institutions. These include the Cervantes Institute, the Cedro Center, the Andalusian Ministry of Culture, the Municipality of Córdoba, the Moroccan Association for Andalusian Friendship, and the Balearia Foundation.
