Recognition of Young Talent in Architecture
The Fondation Jardin Majorelle recently announced the results of the second edition of the prestigious Fondation Jardin Majorelle Prize (FJMP), aimed at promoting young Moroccan architectural talent. The award was bestowed upon Salsabil El Ouazzani for her innovative project titled "Nouala, the Moving Shelter." This announcement took place in Marrakech, marking a significant milestone for emerging architects in the region.
El Ouazzani's project is set to design the future temporary pavilion within the Jardin Majorelle, a historic site that serves as a venue for cultural and artistic exhibitions. The jury praised her design for its thoughtful selection of materials, seamless integration into the garden's environment, and overall architectural feasibility. Additionally, the jury acknowledged El Mehdi Belyassmine with a special mention for his project "Phyllocode," recognizing the diverse talent present in the competition.
Encouraging Future Generations
This year's competition saw participation from 34 aspiring architects representing various Moroccan institutions, including the National Schools of Architecture in Rabat, Casablanca, and Marrakech, as well as the EuroMed School of Architecture, Design, and Urbanism in Fès, and the School of Architecture, Planning and Design at Mohammed VI Polytechnic University in Benguérir. The jury, led by Madison Cox, president of the Fondation Jardin Majorelle, featured notable figures from architecture and contemporary creation, including Hiba Ben Salek, Karl Fournier from Studio KO, and Alexis Sornin, director of the Pierre Bergé Museum of Berber Arts and the Yves Saint Laurent Museum in Marrakech.
Through this initiative, the Fondation aims to nurture new Moroccan talents in contemporary architecture, providing them with a platform for expression within an iconic heritage site. The temporary pavilion, redesigned every two years through this competition, plays a vital role in the cultural programming of the Jardin Majorelle. Currently, the pavilion hosts the exhibition "Les Oiseaux du Jardin Majorelle," which remains accessible to visitors, further enriching their experience at this celebrated location.
Established to preserve the legacy of Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé, the Fondation Jardin Majorelle is committed to cultural, botanical, and architectural heritage while supporting various educational, social, and environmental projects throughout Morocco.
