Ceuta's Attempt to Secure European Sanctions Against Morocco Falls Short
The President of Ceuta, Juan Vivas, representing the Popular Party, faced disappointment during his recent trip to Brussels, where he sought commitments from European institutions regarding sanctions against Morocco. This visit was prompted by a significant influx of migrants at the Tarajal border crossing. Vivas expressed his hopes for a "response" from European authorities, emphasizing their alignment with his perspective on the events that transpired on July 30 and 31.
In his discussions with the European Commission, the European Parliament, and other EU bodies, Vivas asserted that Morocco has allegedly exploited migration pressures to jeopardize the security of Ceuta. He reported that none of the European officials he met contested his account of the situation. On the contrary, during a press conference, he sensed "a strong receptivity and considerable understanding" from the officials.
Vivas urged European authorities to unequivocally clarify that Ceuta and Melilla are Spanish territories and, by extension, European. He stressed that these borders must be respected, asserting that without such acknowledgment, it becomes challenging to maintain fruitful cooperation with any nation.
