Migration Challenges for Storks and Swift Species

As of September 20, 2026, many white storks from Rheinland-Pfalz have successfully arrived in Spain, Morocco, and parts of Africa. These remarkable migratory birds are being tracked through a specialized app designed to monitor their migratory behaviors. However, just a few weeks into their journey to winter habitats, the first losses have been reported. Out of 150 storks fitted with tracking rings by the Stork Center in Bornheim, ten have already been confirmed dead, primarily due to electrocution—a leading cause of mortality for these birds, according to Wolfgang Fiedler, head of the Central Animal Marking Center in Radolfzell, affiliated with the Max Planck Institute for Behavioral Biology.

Among the losses, there is concern for "Rocky," a stork from Freinsheim whose summer upbringing was closely followed by thousands of bird enthusiasts through a dedicated stork camera. The last recorded signal from Rocky, which was accessible via the Animal Tracker app, was dated August 20, originating from the Spanish province of Zaragoza, situated 1,200 kilometers away along the Ebro River. Fiedler speculates that Rocky may have encountered electrocution while seeking a perch on one of the local power poles. While this remains a conjecture, he expresses skepticism about the likelihood of Rocky simply being in an area with poor signal reception and reappearing unexpectedly.

Marie Louise Wiesenbach, who operates the stork camera with her husband Florian Graus, remains hopeful. "We are still optimistic that Rocky has made it through and that there has simply been a technical issue," she stated, noting that the tracking devices are prototypes. Alarmingly, two other local storks—"Fortuna" and "Schorschi" from Erpolzheim—have also gone silent since August 22 and 24, respectively, raising concerns about their fate. "It can't be a coincidence," she added.

Observations from Across the Migration Route

According to Fiedler, most of the young storks are currently located in Spain and Morocco, with some already making their way southward towards Senegal. However, data transmission from these regions is scarce, necessitating patience until the birds reach areas with better connectivity. Fiedler highlights several noteworthy storks: "Clarinette 12356 AJE91" from Zeiskamer Mühle was the first to report from Senegal, having arrived there on August 18, well ahead of others still beginning their migration. In a surprising turn for a Rheinland-Pfalz stork, "Rafael 12353 AJE68" from Maximiliansau has taken an eastern route, with his latest data coming from Syria on September 9. Even more unusual is the journey of "Sol 12281 ALL01" from Kapsweyer, who initially flew northeast to Saxony before moving into the border region between Poland and Slovakia.

Fiedler notes that this year has seen an unusually high number of atypical migration strategies. The relationship between these behaviors and the extreme summer characterized by heat, fires, and drought remains unclear. However, preliminary studies suggest that, after one year, only about 45 out of the initial 150 storks are likely to survive, primarily due to the common threats of electrocution, predation, accidents, and hunting.

In related news, the "Mauerseglerhilfe Apus" organization in Gorxheimertal has reported a disheartening assessment of the swift year, despite hundreds of successful rehabilitations. Chairwoman Jeanette Mayer noted that the facilities have taken in nearly 1,300 swifts and alpine swifts this season, including 294 from Rheinland-Pfalz. The latter half of the season presented immense challenges, with the rescue teams receiving an increasing number of birds suffering from severe feather damage due to extreme heat and the resulting depletion of their insect food sources. This was particularly problematic for juvenile and already weakened birds.

Many of the swifts had to be rescued from private individuals and other centers, where improper care had significantly compromised their health and feather condition, leading to situations where their rehabilitation was no longer feasible. "This is especially bitter for us, as a swift can only be successfully released back into the wild if it has fully intact feathers," Mayer explained. These birds would have had a much better chance of recovery with proper care from the start. The current season has made it abundantly clear that the organization must prepare more effectively for the years ahead. "We must anticipate that extreme weather events, such as heatwaves and their associated impacts on wildlife, will become more frequent, leading to increased waves of rescue cases rather than a decline," she remarked. There is an urgent need for more skilled volunteers and donations.

Despite the exhaustion and the numerous challenging cases, Mayer also pointed out a positive aspect: "Every swift that we can release back into the wild after weeks of intensive care reaffirms the value of our efforts."
