Civil and Human Rights Activism Intensifies Amidst Disturbing Child Exploitation Case in Ba Mohammed

Community Response to Disturbing Child Exploitation Allegations

The recent case involving the alleged sexual exploitation of underage female students in the village of Ba Mohammed has sparked significant civil and human rights activism aimed at clarifying the latest developments in this shocking incident that has reverberated throughout the local and national communities. The organization "Matqeesh Walidi" has expressed its deep concern regarding the sexual assaults reported at the student residence in Ba Mohammed, emphasizing the need to protect the rights of the victims. The group highlighted the gravity of these distressing revelations, asserting that genuine and responsible solidarity with the affected students must prioritize their protection and the acknowledgment of their complete rights, steering clear of any indiscriminate sharing of details that could exacerbate their psychological trauma or reveal their identities.

In a public statement, "Matqeesh Walidi" called for a thorough, independent, and impartial judicial investigation to uncover the truth surrounding this distressing incident, aiming to identify those responsible and bring them to justice if the allegations are confirmed. The organization also insisted on the absolute necessity of maintaining the confidentiality of the victims' identities, urging against the dissemination of their names, photographs, or any identifying information to safeguard their dignity and future social prospects.

Calls for Legal Action and Support for Victims

The organization appealed to relevant official bodies and institutions to intervene promptly to provide necessary psychological, social, and legal support to the student victims and their families, assisting them in overcoming the psychological impacts of this traumatic upheaval. Furthermore, they demanded that relevant ministries enhance monitoring, prevention, and continuous inspections within student residences and all educational care institutions, ensuring maximum protection for female students to guarantee a safe and secure learning environment.

"Matqeesh Walidi" also expressed its initial support for all peaceful solidarity initiatives and human rights statements calling for justice and accountability of those responsible. They pledged to support associations dedicated to child protection and women's rights to bolster national mobilization against all forms of sexual and physical violence targeting children. In parallel, the Federation of Women's Rights Associations announced the establishment of a national defense committee to act as a civil party in the Ba Mohammed minor case, as stated in a public statement from the federation's national office.

The federation underscored its decision to transition into a phase of legal support for this troubling case, aligning with its universal principles of protecting women and children, based on its monitoring of the dismantling of a sexual exploitation and trafficking network involving minors in the city of Ba Mohammed, as reported in the media. The federation also condemned the heinous crime, asserting that the seriousness of the case necessitates the activation of due diligence across all legal and institutional dimensions, moving beyond mere condemnation toward judicial protection and field support for the child victims and their families.

Additionally, the federation highlighted its commitment to acting as a civil party in this case before the courts, advocating for the public and private rights of the child victims and ensuring a fair trial with the imposition of the maximum criminal penalties applicable under aggravated circumstances, which include the status of being a minor, the multiplicity of perpetrators and victims, and the exploitation of compounded vulnerability.

The national office also issued a heartfelt and open call to all human rights lawyers, particularly those in Fez and other national associations, to volunteer and participate in the "Committee for Collective Defense and Solidarity" that the federation is currently forming, ensuring legal support throughout all phases of the investigation and trial.

Moreover, the federation emphasized the need for immediate and free psychological, social, and medical support for the child victims, alongside the implementation of legal assistance while maintaining complete confidentiality regarding their identities, in accordance with Article 301 of the Criminal Procedure Code to prevent social stigmatization and defamation. They called for heightened security and digital monitoring of areas and shelters used to lure minors, urging relevant government sectors to activate vigilance committees within educational institutions and student residences in rural areas, as well as to establish economic empowerment alternatives that cut off pathways for exploitation networks.

The federation concluded its statement by affirming that the dignity and safety of the children are a true red line regarding the rule of law, urging all active and rights-based forces to unite to eradicate impunity for human trafficking crimes.

In a related development, the regional office of the Moroccan Association for Human Rights in the Fez-Meknes region sent an open letter to the public prosecutor at the Court of Appeal in Fez regarding updates on the investigations into the network exploiting minors in Ba Mohammed. The association highlighted the severity of the information circulating about this case in the media, asserting that those involved are attempting to exert pressure to close the file using various means, including attempting to buy the silence of some families of the victims. This has heightened parental fears for their daughters amid these practices, further contributing to school dropout rates among them.

The association stressed the importance of deepening the investigation in accordance with current laws and protecting the best interests of the children, given that there are minor victims involved. According to information obtained by the newspaper, the details of the case began at one of the local educational institutions when a teacher caught a student using her mobile phone in the classroom. This incident escalated when the school administration discovered indecent images of minors on the student's phone, prompting a notification to the security services and the initiation of a judicial investigation.

Sources indicate that preliminary investigations led to the identification of several minors, including two pregnant girls, among others suspected of being exploited due to their vulnerable social conditions. Initial investigations also revealed suspicions of financial exploitation of the victims, with indications that other parties may be involved in abortive procedures and related activities.

Notably, the main suspect in this case is a woman approximately 40 years old with a history of similar offenses outside the region, currently held in provisional detention. She is suspected of acting as an intermediary and luring minors, along with the involvement of other individuals, including influential figures and politicians in the area. Investigations have involved over 15 individuals who have been questioned due to their suspected connections to the case. Subsequently, the public prosecutor at the Court of Appeal in Fez decided to detain several of them provisionally, including the main suspect, while others were released on temporary bail, with the cases of some individuals being closed due to insufficient evidence of their involvement.

The relevant public prosecutor continues to deepen judicial inquiries to uncover all potential extensions of this case and identify all presumed perpetrators of the criminal acts under investigation.
