Commencement of Academic Phase for African Lion 2026 Military Drills in Agadir, Morocco

Over 400 Troops Engage in Academic Training

In a significant military endeavor, over 400 troops from various nations have convened in southern Morocco to participate in the academic phase of the African Lion 2026 military drills. This training initiative, conducted under the auspices of the U.S. military, is taking place at the Southern Zone headquarters in Agadir from April 20 through May 1, 2026. The exercise aims to enhance collaborative military capabilities through a series of intensive courses designed to prepare personnel for forthcoming field exercises.

The academic phase encompasses 22 specialized courses that delve into cutting-edge military capabilities, including unmanned aerial systems, cyber defense, and satellite operations, setting the groundwork for advanced combat simulations. According to U.S. Marine Corps Major Kev Mertau, this academic component is fundamental to the overall operational training, intended to bolster technical knowledge, expedite decision-making processes, and enhance operational effectiveness across multiple domains.

Collaboration and Knowledge Exchange

The array of courses offered ranges from introductory to advanced levels, with specialized modules focusing on critical areas such as space operations, electromagnetic warfare, and cyber warfare tactics. First Lieutenant Mason Elizondo emphasized the importance of cyber training, which focuses on identifying and mitigating digital threats across various platforms, including Windows, Linux, and cloud environments. Additionally, the course encourages participants to share best practices in cybersecurity to fortify defenses against potential cyberattacks.

In a noteworthy aspect of this initiative, participants are engaged in collaborative learning exercises with their Moroccan counterparts. This partnership underscores the mutual exchange of knowledge and skills, as pointed out by Elizondo, who noted, "The partners are highly skilled and knowledgeable. We’re not just teaching — we’re learning from them as well." Major Travis Herman further elaborated that working alongside allied forces cultivates readiness and fosters a shared understanding of operational strategies. The integration of academic instruction with multinational cooperation is strategically aimed at enhancing deterrence, validating innovative approaches, and strengthening the long-term defense capabilities of partner nations.
