A New Era of Cooperation Between Austria and Morocco
On Wednesday, Austrian Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger, representing the NEOS party, and Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita solidified a new chapter in international relations by signing an agreement for a strategic dialogue between Austria and Morocco in Vienna. While the specific details of the agreement remain undisclosed, Meinl-Reisinger characterized this initiative as a significant advancement in what she referred to as an "excellent partnership." She emphasized the necessity of forging robust alliances in today's evolving global landscape, stating, "In the new world order, we need strong partnerships for our security, economic opportunities, and cooperation on migration. With Morocco, we have an exceptional partnership." The Minister further highlighted that this agreement represents a deepening commitment to strategic dialogue.
Minister Bourita echoed her sentiments, noting that despite the considerable geographical distance between the two nations, a strong and solid understanding can yield beneficial results for both their populations and the broader region. This partnership is not merely political; it extends into economic spheres, where Morocco stands as Austria's third most significant export market in Africa. According to a report by the Austrian Economic Chamber in October 2025, Austrian exports to Morocco surged by 16 percent in 2024, defying global trends. In the first half of 2025, the export volume surged by approximately 23 percent compared to the same period the previous year, indicating a growing interest among Austrian exporters in the Moroccan market.
Shared Interests in Security and Stability
Meinl-Reisinger emphasized that Morocco is not just an economic partner but also shares a mutual interest in promoting security and stability while combating irregular migration. She expressed appreciation for Morocco's cooperation in these critical areas, stating, "Developments in Africa also impact our security and economic interests." This sentiment reflects the countries' previous engagement, which began with a memorandum of understanding in February 2023 that addressed trade cooperation and the fight against irregular migration. More recently, in September 2024, a state treaty was established concerning the transfer of convicted individuals.
Austria and Morocco have maintained diplomatic relations for over 240 years, dating back to 1783 when Emperor Joseph II and Moroccan Ambassador Mohamed bin Abdelmalik signed a friendship treaty in Vienna. Meinl-Reisinger remarked, "At that time, we concluded a treaty concerning trade and peace. What could be more fitting in times of global instability than to reflect on what truly matters?" Bourita added that the bilateral relations between the two countries are firmly based on shared values and interests, underscoring the significance of their longstanding partnership.
