On April 2, a diverse gathering of ninety individuals came together at the Pleasantville Community Synagogue and Neighbors Link at Grace Episcopal Church in Ossining to participate in a unique immigration-themed Passover seder. This heartfelt event was led by Rabbi Shoshana Leis and Rabbi Ben Newman, who emphasized the importance of community and shared experiences in their opening remarks.
Rabbi Leis warmly welcomed attendees under the theme of "Walking Towards Freedom Together," highlighting the collective responsibilities we hold toward one another as neighbors. The evening featured a compelling address by Cesar Zepeda, a development officer at Neighbors Link, who captivated the audience with poignant stories detailing the struggles and triumphs faced by local immigrants. These narratives not only resonated with the attendees but also prompted reflections on their own family histories and the broader immigrant experience prevalent in society today.
The seder was enriched by a delightful mix of traditional and modern melodies, skillfully led by Rabbi Ben Newman, creating an atmosphere of joy and celebration. Participants enjoyed a delectable array of Passover dishes provided by Falafel-Taco of Pleasantville, complemented by various home-cooked offerings from the community. This culinary experience served not just to nourish the body but also to strengthen communal bonds.
A particularly touching moment occurred when PCS congregant David Benattar, who identifies as a French Moroccan Israeli-American, held the seder plate above each participant’s head while chanting a traditional Moroccan Passover blessing. His words echoed the sentiment of compassion and humility, reminding everyone that "every human being is created in the image of God, and we must show kindness to all." This ritual beautifully encapsulated the spirit of the evening.
As the event drew to a close, Rabbi Leis and Cesar Zepeda discussed ways to support Neighbors Link and advocated for the passage of the New York for All Act, reinforcing the evening's commitment to social justice and community support. This inspiring seder was made possible through the sponsorship of the Pleasantville Community Synagogue, with funding from the UJA Federation of New York and contributions from participants. Notably, all proceeds from the event were donated to Neighbors Link, furthering the cause of community upliftment.
