Community Unites in Dearborn to Support Morocco During World Cup Loss to France

On a recent Thursday, the vibrant community of Dearborn, Michigan, witnessed an emotional gathering as hundreds of soccer enthusiasts came together to support the Moroccan national team during their World Cup quarterfinal match against France. The event, held at Peace Park, was filled with excitement and anticipation, as fans donned their national colors and rallied to cheer for the Atlas Lions. However, the atmosphere shifted dramatically when the match concluded with a disappointing 2-0 loss for Morocco.

Among the attendees was Fadwa Zougagh, a passionate supporter, who expressed her pride in being Moroccan despite the team's defeat. "I'm Moroccan, supporting Morocco, of course. I'm so proud to be Moroccan, and I'm so proud of my team, so proud of my country. I'm happy with everything they did. But today, no. I'm not happy with what happened. It's not because we lost against France, but because I feel there's something not going right with Morocco. That's not how they play. That's not how we got used to them to play," she shared, reflecting the mixed emotions felt by many fans.

Another attendee, Walid Fidama, echoed similar sentiments, lamenting that Morocco did not perform as they had in previous matches. "Morocco, really, this time, I love Morocco, but this time really, today especially, they don't play like the last game they are doing," he stated. Despite the disappointment, Fidama highlighted the significance of the watch party, emphasizing the unity it fostered within the community. "We are gathering here and we are seeing all the matches, and I believe this is good for Dearborn to show how everybody loves soccer," he remarked.

This watch party was reminiscent of a similar event four years ago when Morocco faced defeat in the semifinals during the Qatar World Cup. The Moroccan team, which made history as the first African nation to reach the World Cup semifinals in 2022, has garnered immense pride and support from the local Arab-American community. Dearborn, often referred to as the capital of Arab America, is home to a significant population of Arab descent, with more than half of the Detroit area's 110,000 residents identifying as Arab-American.

Zougagh further emphasized the importance of community backing, stating, "For the watch party in this park, I am so proud that all Arab and community here, they're supporting us, supporting Morocco, even they're not Moroccan." Such solidarity showcases the power of sports to bring people together, transcending nationalities and backgrounds, fostering a sense of belonging and camaraderie among attendees.

As the match unfolded, Kylian Mbappé's remarkable performance, which included a goal and an assist after missing a first-half penalty kick, helped secure France's victory, propelling them into the semifinals against either Spain or Belgium. Despite the defeat, the resilience and passion displayed by the Moroccan supporters in Dearborn exemplify the enduring spirit of sportsmanship and community solidarity.
