Rabat's Upcoming Pedestrian Promenade: A New Urban Attraction

The long-awaited pedestrian promenade along the Bouregreg River in Rabat is nearing completion, marking a significant milestone in urban development for the city. As of October 1, 2026, construction teams were actively engaged in finalizing the last stages of this ambitious project. According to observations made on-site, the new promenade aims not only to enhance the scenic beauty of the riverbank but also to provide residents and visitors with a vibrant space for leisure and relaxation.

Initiated by the Agency for the Development of the Bouregreg Valley (AAVB), the project features a wooden walkway that stretches alongside the river, complemented by a spacious pavilion also constructed from wood. While the exact purpose of this pavilion remains unannounced, it is speculated that it may serve as a dining venue, adding to the gastronomic offerings available to the public. This new development is expected to promote continuous pedestrian access along the Bouregreg shoreline, enriching the recreational options for those who frequent the area.

Feedback from early visitors has been overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing optimism about how this project could elevate the attractiveness of the Rabat riverbank and expand the leisure activities available in the capital. The AAVB, which was established in November 2005 as a public agency with legal status and financial autonomy, is responsible for planning and implementing the development program for the valley, including conducting relevant technical and financial studies. The agency also oversees the creation of the Special Development Plan (PAS), which delineates the various zoning functions and applicable land use regulations within its jurisdiction.
