Concerns for Press Freedom in Morocco After Journalist's Arrest

Ali Lmrabet's Arrest Raises Alarm for Journalistic Freedom

On July 12, Ali Lmrabet, a French-Moroccan journalist, was detained upon his arrival at Tangier Airport. Reports from PEN Berlin indicate that he has since been released; however, significant concerns regarding press freedom in Morocco persist. Lmrabet, who has been recognized as one of Morocco's most prominent government-critical journalists for decades, faced imprisonment in 2003 due to his critical reporting on the monarchy. His publications were subsequently banned, and he was barred from working as a journalist in Morocco for many years, ultimately reporting from exile in Spain since 2015.

PEN Berlin condemned Lmrabet's arrest and called for his "immediate and unconditional release." Daniela Sepehri, a board member of PEN Berlin, emphasized that the Moroccan authorities should promptly release Lmrabet and refrain from using the judicial system to target independent voices. While Lmrabet has been released, the overarching issue of press freedom in Morocco remains a serious concern. In fact, PEN Berlin highlighted that just one day after Lmrabet's detention, Moroccan filmmaker and musician El Mahdi Lyoubi was arrested in Casablanca. His detention was reportedly linked to his critical statements on social media and his support for the youth movement GenZ 212.

The writers' association has urged the German government to address the issue of press freedom and the protection of independent journalists in its dialogues with Morocco, given the close political and economic ties between the two nations. They assert, "Journalism is not a crime." This statement underscores the vital role of press freedom in any democratic society and the need for international advocacy to protect journalists from persecution.
