Urgent Call for Action Against Traffic Chaos
The streets of Casablanca, Morocco's economic capital, are currently engulfed in relentless traffic turmoil, with various types of motorcycles and three-wheeled vehicles, known locally as "tricycles" and "trotinettes," contributing to a significant rise in disorder. Consumer protection organizations have raised alarms over the deteriorating situation, suggesting that the reckless behaviors of these vehicle operators pose an immediate threat to public safety and physical integrity.
This issue extends beyond mere disruptions in traffic flow; it has escalated to a level where fatal accidents are claiming lives, prompting serious questions about the enforcement of traffic laws in this bustling metropolis. According to Ali Shtour, the head of the Moroccan Association for Consumer Rights Defense, there has been a noticeable increase in violations of traffic regulations in Casablanca. He indicated that a segment of motorcycle riders, particularly those using three-wheeled vehicles and electric scooters, continues to flout established laws.
Shtour, who is also a member of the Moroccan Consumer Rights University, elaborated that these violations manifest as a blatant disregard for basic road rules. The lack of adherence to legal provisions designed to ensure smooth traffic flow and orderly movement within the city reflects a troubling level of indiscipline among some drivers. He warned that such irresponsible actions are increasingly endangering the safety of pedestrians, particularly vulnerable groups within the community, including children and the elderly, who are at greater risk of accidents due to the failure to respect their designated pathways and rights on the road.
Furthermore, Shtour emphasized that Law No. 52.05, which governs road traffic, clearly outlines the rights and responsibilities of road users, mandating all drivers to comply with these rules to ensure a safer and more organized transit environment. The situation necessitates immediate intervention from local authorities to restore order and protect the citizens of Casablanca.
