Controversy Surrounds FIFA Referee Ismail Al-Fateh Ahead of World Cup Semifinal

Ismail Al-Fateh Faces Criticism from Spain Ahead of Key Match

As anticipation builds for the highly awaited semifinal match of the 2026 World Cup between Argentina and England, the appointment of American referee Ismail Al-Fateh has sparked significant backlash, particularly from Spanish journalist Miguel Serrano. In a recent post on X, Serrano voiced his disapproval of Al-Fateh's selection, arguing that his past officiating performances do not warrant the responsibility of managing such a pivotal match.

Serrano's criticism stems from Al-Fateh's controversial decisions during the tournament, specifically pointing to his leniency towards violent play during the match between Uruguay and Spain, which he described as one of the worst officiating displays of the World Cup. He remarked, "This is the referee who allowed Uruguay to play violently against Spain, and who only called for VAR intervention after missing a clear penalty for Brazil. And this is his reward! What FIFA is doing is unbelievable." This statement underscores the frustration felt by many regarding the standards of officiating at such a high level.

Additionally, Serrano recalled another contentious moment from the match between Brazil and Norway, where Al-Fateh failed to award a penalty to Brazil until VAR prompted him to do so. Al-Fateh, who was born in Casablanca, Morocco, in 1982, moved to the United States at the age of 18 and became a naturalized citizen. He joined FIFA's list of referees in 2016 and has officiated at several major tournaments, including the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where he served as the fourth official in the final match between Argentina and France. Despite ongoing controversies surrounding his officiating, Al-Fateh has been assigned to additional critical matches in the current tournament, raising eyebrows about FIFA's decision-making process.
