Controversy Surrounds Public Prayers by Haredi Jews in Marrakech

Public Prayer by Haredi Jews Sparks National Debate in Morocco

In Marrakech, the occurrence of foreign Haredi Jews conducting their prayers in front of the historic Bab Doukkala gate has ignited a significant debate within Moroccan society. This incident has drawn sharp divisions among the populace, with some opposing this action and others supporting it under the premise of "freedom of religious belief." The event has prompted a range of reactions, including local activists cleaning the gate, which they deemed had been subjected to "impurity." Conversely, the Moroccan Christian Union has voiced its rejection of any infringement on religious freedom.

Hasan Al-Mous, a researcher in religious sciences and a member of the Maqasid Center for Studies and Research, emphasized that Moroccan Jews living in the kingdom possess full rights, as guaranteed by Islamic law and local laws, which include the freedom to conduct their business and perform their religious practices within their own places of worship. Al-Mous stated in an interview with Hespress that the current objections are not against the act of worship itself but are closely related to the context and circumstances surrounding the recent incident.

The crux of the issue lies in the arrival of a group of "Zionists" to Bab Doukkala, a site of significant symbolic value. Al-Mous pointed out that the nature of their rituals, which resemble those performed at the "Western Wall," and the timing of these actions are perceived as a direct provocation to the feelings of Moroccan Muslims. He added that this incident comes at a sensitive time when Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Palestinian people are facing severe violations, highlighting that it followed closely after massive demonstrations by hundreds of thousands of Moroccans in support of Jerusalem and the Palestinian cause.

Al-Mous expressed that the protests against this incident stem from a sense of national pride and a refusal to allow any part of Morocco to resemble the "Wailing Wall." He maintained that these actions represent a clear affront to the consensus among Moroccans, who regard the issue of Jerusalem, chaired by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, as equivalent to their national cause. In conclusion, Al-Mous dismissed the justifications of "freedom of belief" put forth by some defenders of this practice, reiterating his stance against provocative Zionist acts in sensitive locations.

Christian Leaders Call for Tolerance Amidst Rising Tensions

Pastor Adam Rabati, the head of the Moroccan Christian Union, expressed his strong condemnation of the recent scenes where a bus stopped, leading to a group of Jews performing their religious rituals in Bab Doukkala, and the subsequent aggressive reactions to this act. Rabati confirmed in his remarks to Hespress that the incident has sparked a considerable backlash on social media, coinciding with protests organized to denounce the event, which he believes contradicts the values of tolerance and coexistence that characterize Morocco.

Pastor Rabati pointed out that the 2011 Constitution explicitly acknowledges the Hebrew identity of Morocco and that the kingdom is globally recognized for its religious tolerance and hosting international conferences under the aegis of the Institution of the Commanders of the Faithful, which is open to dialogue and coexistence among religions. He argued that such protests jeopardize religious freedom and the reputation of Moroccans, granting adversaries of the kingdom an opportunity to tarnish its image. He stressed that this cultural and religious heritage belongs to all Moroccans and must be preserved.

In closing, Pastor Rabati announced that the Moroccan Christian Union issued a statement condemning these actions and called for authorities to intervene to protect this national heritage and combat what he described as "hate speech" that fuels extremism and religious intolerance within the country.
