British Athletes Convicted for Involvement in Sexual Assault Case
In a troubling case that has garnered significant media attention, five British men, including three former athletes, have been convicted in Morocco in connection with the sexual assault of a minor involving the ex-British sprinter Leon Baptiste. Baptiste, who is currently serving an eight-month prison sentence for the assault, has faced serious legal repercussions, as have his associates. The convictions were confirmed by Moroccan court rulings reported by BBC Sport.
The convicted individuals include two-time Commonwealth silver medalist hurdler Will Sharman, along with his brother Richard Sharman, a former bobsleigh competitor, and Lamin Deen, also a former Olympic bobsledder. Additionally, Ashley O'Leary Jones and David Tuck received four-month suspended prison sentences and were fined 500 dirhams for their involvement in the enticement of a minor. Importantly, they were acquitted of a separate charge of inciting the minor to engage in prostitution. Their sentences were upheld following an appeal in July, after they had left Morocco.
According to the Moroccan public prosecutor's office, these five men were present with Baptiste and the minor, assisting him in deceiving her and persuading her to engage in sexual relations. The accused have maintained that they were unaware of any unlawful conduct, asserting through their legal representatives that they only believed they had paid a minor administrative fine of approximately £40, not recognizing the gravity of their situation.
The case originated when a 16-year-old Moroccan girl alerted authorities, prompting them to conduct a raid on a villa located in Tamensourt, near Marrakech. The girl indicated that she had been taken to the villa under false pretenses, had not received the compensation she had been promised for sex with Baptiste, and later faced assault from a housekeeper who accused her of theft. Court documents reveal that she endured significant psychological trauma, sexual exploitation, physical abuse, and violations of her dignity.
Additional convictions were made in connection with this case. The housekeeper of the villa and two security guards were sentenced to two-month suspended terms and fined 5,000 dirhams each. Furthermore, the manager of the Montecristo nightclub, where the group met the victim, received a two-month prison sentence. A waiter and the owner of the agency that rented the villa were also charged as part of the investigation.
As a result of the court's decision, the victim was awarded 60,000 dirhams in compensation, which is to be jointly paid by those convicted, in addition to the incurred court costs. In a significant response to the gravity of the situation, Moroccan authorities have since closed the Montecristo nightclub as part of their investigation, and it has not reopened since.
