Court Proceedings Begin in Fes Building Collapse Case
The Court of Appeal in Fes has scheduled the first session of the trial concerning the collapse of two buildings that occurred in December of the previous year. This tragic event claimed the lives of 22 individuals and left 16 others injured. The trial is set to commence next Monday, August 10, with 21 defendants facing various charges related to the incident.
The Attorney General has referred the case to the primary criminal chamber, which will begin deliberations at 9 AM in courtroom number 2. Among the accused, one individual, identified as "A.I.", faces the charge of "issuing or ordering the issuance of administrative documents and certificates to someone who is known to have no right to them." This charge arises from a case that has drawn significant public attention due to its devastating consequences.
Others involved, such as "G.A." and "B.N.", are charged with bribery and causing involuntary manslaughter due to negligence. Additionally, "A.A." has been charged with bribery, while "J.A.", the district president, faces similar charges related to administrative misconduct. The prosecution has also charged "N.A." and "A.M." with mismanagement of non-transferable assets, bribery, and involuntary manslaughter due to negligence.
The investigation revealed that the two collapsed buildings had been constructed with additional floors without the required legal permits. Furthermore, these structures were found to have been involved in illegal transactions, including the unauthorized transfer of air rights and the issuance of occupancy certificates that did not comply with existing laws and regulations.
This case has highlighted pressing issues regarding building regulations and safety standards in urban development, particularly in Fes, where such tragedies could be prevented with stricter enforcement of legal frameworks.
