Court Rulings on Marrakech Wholesale Market Corruption Case

Significant Rulings in the Marrakech Wholesale Fruit and Vegetable Market Case

The Primary Criminal Chamber responsible for financial crimes at the Marrakech Court of Appeal has delivered its preliminary rulings regarding the management of the wholesale market for fruits and vegetables. This case involved several officials and employees who were charged with misappropriation of public funds and forgery of official documents. The court's decisions are pivotal in addressing issues related to financial governance within one of the key economic sectors of the city.

Among the key outcomes of the proceedings, the court ruled to dismiss the public prosecution case against the former mayor of Marrakech, Omar Jazouli, due to his passing. Additionally, the defendant known as 'M.Z.' was acquitted of all charges against him after the court decided not to hold him criminally responsible. In contrast, five other defendants, identified as 'M.Z.', 'M.M.', 'M.K.', 'A.F.', and another 'M.M.', were convicted and sentenced to two years of imprisonment, consisting of one year in jail and another year suspended, along with a fine of 50,000 dirhams each.

Furthermore, the court issued sentences for other convicted individuals, imposing a one-year suspended prison term and a mandatory fine of 20,000 dirhams per defendant, along with the obligation to cover court costs when applicable. At the conclusion of the session, all convicted individuals were informed of their right to appeal the decision within the legally prescribed time limits.

This case has garnered significant local interest, given its implications for the management of a vital economic facility in Marrakech, and it has sparked discussions on the proper administration of public finances and the adherence to legal and administrative regulations within the wholesale market for fruits and vegetables.
