Exploring Direct Air Links Between Morocco and India
The Moroccan government is currently evaluating the establishment of direct flight routes to India, a strategic move aimed at enhancing tourism flows between the two nations. As reported by The Times of India, officials from Morocco acknowledge that while the current number of travelers does not yet warrant a direct flight service, there is a promising upward trend in interest. In 2025, Morocco welcomed approximately 54,000 Indian tourists, a figure projected to rise to 70,000 in 2026. The target is to reach 100,000 annual visitors to make direct flights a viable option.
Jamal Kilito, the director of the Moroccan National Tourist Office, emphasized during a media conference in Chennai, India, that once the visitor count reaches the 100,000 mark, establishing a direct flight will become feasible. Presently, travelers must rely on connecting flights with layovers, typically in West Asian or European hubs, which prolongs travel times and limits accessibility to Morocco. This situation is seen as a barrier to increasing tourism from India.
Growing Interest from Indian Tourists
Indian tourists are showing an increasing interest in Morocco, highlighted by the number of Indian weddings held in the country and the presence of over 15 MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) groups annually. Additionally, Morocco is becoming a favored location for Indian filmmakers, with many Bollywood films being shot on its picturesque landscapes.
Popular destinations within Morocco include Marrakech, Fès, Casablanca, Rabat, and Tangier, each offering diverse cultural, historical, and coastal experiences. Despite the growing interest, industry experts have pointed out that high airfare remains a significant obstacle. For instance, a round trip from Chennai costs around 80,000 rupees (approximately 7,954.53 dirhams), a price comparable to certain European destinations. Travelers believe that introducing direct flights could lower travel costs, making Morocco a more attractive option for a larger audience, as stated by Sriharan Balan, the managing director of Madura Travel Service Pvt Ltd.
