What if the journey to discover a medina began with taking the time to truly observe it? This is the intriguing approach presented by Éditions Bouillon de Culture in their latest publication, "La médina de Rabat." This work is designed not only as a discovery guide but also as a valuable tool for transmitting cultural heritage. Under the direction of editor Rita Baddou, the project comprises two complementary booklets aimed at enhancing the reader's experience.

The first booklet, titled "Regard sur la médina de Rabat," delves into the historical tapestry, topography, and architectural nuances of the old city. It invites readers to engage with the medina’s identity by observing its doors, traditional houses, and intricate ornamental details, thereby fostering a deeper understanding of its architecture. This immersive examination encourages an appreciation for the rich visual and cultural elements that define the medina.

Medina of Rabat

The second booklet, "4 parcours dans la médina de Rabat," transitions from reading to exploration. It offers four accessible routes for both children and adults, designed to guide participants through the medina while emphasizing the features highlighted in the first booklet. The concept is straightforward yet profound: look up, observe, identify, and, most importantly, cultivate a more attentive relationship with the environment. This approach ensures that the medina is not merely viewed as an ancient backdrop but as a vibrant space, alive with memories, practices, and architectural narratives that span centuries.

Exploring Rabat

This publication features the collaborative efforts of author and illustrator Emmanuelle Peckre and author and photographer Karine Hazera. Their work has undergone scientific review by experts Nabil Rahmouni and Maria El Glaoui, with a preface contributed by Salima S. El Mandjra. The illustrations and photographs within the book are credited to Emmanuelle Peckre, Karine Hazera, and Damien Hazera, creating a rich visual narrative to complement the text.

Karine Hazera and Emmanuelle Peckre express their motivation behind this book, stating, "We have undoubtedly written the book we wish we had when we first discovered the medina of Rabat, to guide our steps and our eyes." Having moved to Morocco in 2000 and settled in Rabat since 2003, the authors share a unique bond with the capital. With a background in architecture and a keen interest in urban spaces, Karine Hazera focuses on places and their atmospheres. In contrast, Emmanuelle Peckre, trained as an occupational therapist, also engages in drawing and painting while previously exploring the transmission of Moroccan heritage to younger audiences.

Through this publication, Bouillon de Culture continues its "Découverte" collection, aimed at fostering a deeper understanding of Moroccan history and heritage. The book caters to a diverse audience, including residents of Rabat, visitors, families, educators, and students, making it an essential addition for anyone interested in the cultural richness of the city.

The "La médina de Rabat" book is available at bookstores for 400 dirhams, encompassing both booklets, which are not sold separately. Each booklet consists of 177 pages and is accessible to readers aged ten and above.
