Discovery of Giant Mosasaur Fossil in Morocco Sheds Light on Pre-Dinosaur Marine Diversity

In a groundbreaking discovery, researchers have unearthed a colossal fossil of a mosasaur, a prehistoric marine reptile that roamed the Earth approximately 66 million years ago, in Morocco. This finding may provide valuable insights into the marine biodiversity that existed prior to the mass extinction event that wiped out the dinosaurs. The fossil was located by an international team of scientists in the phosphatic deposits of Sidi Chennane, situated in the Khouribga province, which is located in central Morocco. It has been classified as a new species named Pluridens imelaki, a giant mosasaur that is estimated to have reached lengths of around 9 meters based on the size of its skull.

According to researchers Nicholas R. Longrich and Nour-Eddine Jalil, Pluridens imelaki is one of the largest mosasaurs discovered to date, and its rarity suggests that it may have been a migratory or infrequent taxon within its ecosystem. The study, recently published in the journal Diversity, highlights the significance of this find, noting that only one specimen has been recovered from the area of Sidi Chennane, which is renowned for its rich deposits of marine fossils from the Cretaceous period.

The researchers further elaborate that the mosasaurs were significant marine predators, and this particular discovery reveals variations among species, including some that possessed finer jaws and teeth adapted for capturing smaller prey. This is an important finding that enhances our understanding of the evolutionary adaptations that occurred in marine life before the dinosaurs vanished from the planet. Currently, the fossil is housed at the Marrakech Museum of Natural History, and researchers are optimistic that further studies will illuminate the evolution of prehistoric marine fauna.
