Search for Fugitive Gang Leader in Morocco
The Dutch authorities are intensifying their efforts to locate Matien H., a 22-year-old who has been identified by prosecutors as the alleged leader of a youth gang based in Lelystad. This young man reportedly fled to Morocco after removing his electronic monitoring bracelet on July 8. According to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, sources within criminal circles indicate that Matien, who is of Iraqi descent, is currently residing in Morocco. These sources claim he is living discreetly while maintaining contact with his network back in Lelystad. However, his presence in Morocco has not yet been officially confirmed.
The Dutch prosecution remains cautious regarding his whereabouts. Daphne Rozenburg, a spokesperson for the prosecution, stated, "On July 8, a suspect in this investigation cut off his electronic bracelet. He has been on the run since then. We are actively searching for him and will not make any further comments on the matter." Matien was released in March while awaiting trial after spending 390 days in pre-trial detention. Authorities suspect him of orchestrating a group of young individuals from the De Kempenaar neighborhood in Lelystad, with several members—including some minors—allegedly involved in burglaries, thefts, extortion, and acts of intimidation.
This investigation, which has been ongoing for over three years, relies heavily on phone taps and surveillance operations. These efforts have purportedly uncovered a structured and hierarchical organization led by Matien. Despite his escape, the judicial process continues. Dutch prosecutors are considering a trial in absentia, with hearings scheduled for the autumn.
