Dutch Deputy PM Condemns Moroccan Fans After World Cup Riots

Violence Erupts Following Morocco's Defeat in World Cup Quarterfinals

In the wake of Morocco's recent World Cup defeat to France, Dutch Deputy Prime Minister Dilan Yeşilgöz-Zegerius has publicly criticized Moroccan football fans for their violent behavior during protests across the Netherlands. In a statement made on social media, Yeşilgöz-Zegerius described the actions of certain supporters as those of "madmen," stating that whether Morocco wins or loses, some fans resort to chaos instead of accepting the outcomes of a football tournament with grace. Her remarks came after reports of violent clashes between fans and police in various cities, notably following Morocco's 2-0 loss in the quarterfinal match.

The incidents unfolded on Thursday night, when fans took to the streets to express their frustration, leading to confrontations with law enforcement. According to sources from Dutch media, aggressive behavior included throwing glass bottles at police officers and firing fireworks, prompting a swift response from anti-riot units. In Rotterdam, reports indicated that police were targeted with eggs, while in Amsterdam, confrontations escalated to aggression against journalists covering the events.

Yeşilgöz-Zegerius, a member of the center-right People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD), has been vocal about her tough stance on immigration policies in the Netherlands. Last year, she expressed concerns over the rising number of people entering the country, advocating for a change in policy to improve the situation. Following the riots, Dutch far-right leader Geert Wilders chimed in, criticizing the VVD party and accusing them of allowing undesirable individuals into the country.

This is not the first time Moroccan football matches have been marred by violence in the Netherlands. After Morocco's earlier victory over the Netherlands in the Round of 32, law enforcement had to arrest several individuals for public disorder. Additionally, unrest was reported after the Africa Cup of Nations final earlier this year, further highlighting a troubling trend linked to fan behavior during significant football events.
