EasyJet Expands in Africa with New Base
On April 15, 2026, EasyJet officially inaugurated its first African base at Marrakech Menara Airport, marking a significant milestone in the airline's commitment to enhancing air transport and boosting tourism in Morocco. This launch coincides with EasyJet's 20th anniversary of operations in the country, representing a transformative step in improving the kingdom's air connectivity and promoting national tourism development.
The new base, which operates three Airbus aircraft and boasts an overall investment exceeding €150 million, solidifies EasyJet's position as the second largest airline operating in Marrakech. This year-round base is set to provide a record capacity of 4 million seats for flights to and from Morocco, catering to the increasing demand for air travel in the region.
From a socio-economic perspective, the establishment of this base is expected to create around 100 direct jobs and several thousand indirect jobs across the aviation, tourism, and services sectors. Each aircraft stationed at the base is projected to contribute approximately €30 million in gross added value to the local economy, highlighting the critical role of air transport in territorial development.
In comments to the press, Mohsine Chafai El Alaoui, the regional tourism delegate for Marrakech-Safi, emphasized that the development of air transport is a top priority in the region's tourism strategy due to its direct impact on demand, arrivals, and overall tourism activity. He noted that the recent years have seen a significant rise in arrivals to Marrakech, and the establishment of this base will further enhance this momentum and facilitate the opening of new flight routes.
