EBRD's Commitment to African Technology Innovation

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has made a significant move in the venture capital landscape by committing US$8 million (€6.8 million) to the Ventures Platform Pan-African Fund II. This investment marks the EBRD's inaugural venture into a pan-African venture capital fund aimed at exploring opportunities within sub-Saharan Africa. The fund is strategically focused on investing in early-stage technology companies across the continent, particularly in countries such as Côte d'Ivoire, Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria, and Senegal. The emphasis is on identifying and supporting businesses that demonstrate strong growth potential, thereby fostering innovation, job creation, and overall private-sector development.

This initiative forms a component of the EBRD's broader Early-Stage Innovation Facility II, which operates with a budget of €200 million. Through this facility, the EBRD aims to bolster commercially-oriented venture capital funds that target high-potential technology companies. By doing so, the bank hopes to enhance access to finance, deepen innovation ecosystems, and stimulate private-sector growth across Africa.

Strengthening Africa's Venture Capital Ecosystem

Kola Aina, the Founding Partner of Ventures Platform, expressed enthusiasm about the EBRD's investment, stating, "We are delighted to welcome the EBRD as an investor in Ventures Platform Pan-African Fund II. Its commitment reflects a shared conviction that Africa’s next generation of globally relevant technology companies will be built by founders solving meaningful problems and creating new markets." Aina highlighted that the EBRD's participation not only provides necessary capital but also signals a growing institutional confidence in Africa's innovation economy. This confidence is vital for empowering ambitious founders who are dedicated to building sustainable companies that create lasting value for both Africa and the global market.

Dirk Werner, the EBRD’s Managing Director of Equity, noted that innovation is rapidly shaping Africa's economic landscape, yet the venture capital sector is still underdeveloped compared to the continent's entrepreneurial activity. He emphasized that by investing in Ventures Platform Pan-African Fund II, the EBRD is playing a crucial role in strengthening the market infrastructure that allows innovative businesses to secure growth capital and expand their impact.

Since entering the African market in 2025, the EBRD has already invested €620 million across five sub-Saharan African countries, showcasing its commitment to fostering economic growth and technological advancement in the region.
