Ecuador National Team Announces Squad for Friendlies Ahead of World Cup 2026

Ecuador's national football team, affectionately known as La Tri, has unveiled a list of 34 players called up for upcoming friendly matches against Morocco and the Netherlands. This announcement, made on March 20, 2024, comes just months before the highly anticipated World Cup 2026. The matches will take place at the Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid on March 27 against the African side, followed by a clash with the Dutch team in Eindhoven on March 31.

Head coach Sebastián Beccacece has already identified 20 players who are almost certain to make the final squad for the World Cup, leaving six spots open for contention. This decision to call up a sizable number of players for this FIFA date is notably surprising, particularly with the World Cup only a couple of months away. Beccacece appears to have several uncertainties regarding positions in midfield and forward roles, and these upcoming weeks will provide him with the opportunity to assess the performance of players still vying for their places in the World Cup lineup.

Since taking charge of the team, the Argentine coach has largely maintained a consistent group of players, indicating that this call-up may serve as a preliminary list for the World Cup. This is one of the most extensive selections Beccacece has made during his tenure, aimed at evaluating the performance of various players competing for the coveted spots in the final squad.

Despite initial concerns that Nilson Angulo might be absent due to injury, Beccacece has included him in the roster, recognizing his importance to the team and his likely participation in the World Cup. Conversely, several players, including Xavier Arreaga, Cristian Ramírez, and Keny Arroyo, who have been part of the process, were not included in the 34-player list.

Among the more surprising returns for the March FIFA date are Anthony Valencia, who has struggled with injuries but possesses the ability to add depth and explosiveness to the flanks. Additionally, goalkeepers Moisés Ramírez and David Cabezas have been called up despite their inconsistent performances. Andrés Hurtado also makes a return to the squad, while Jeremy Arévalo remains a crucial component in the team's attacking strategy.
