Leonardo Campana Exits Ecuador's National Team Due to Injury
Ecuador faces a significant setback as Leonardo Campana has been ruled out of the national squad for upcoming friendly matches against Morocco and the Netherlands. The unfortunate news comes after Campana sustained an injury while playing with his club, the New England Revolution, on March 21, 2026.
On the morning of March 22, the Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF) announced that Campana would not participate in the matches scheduled for March 27 and March 31, which are set to take place in Madrid and Eindhoven respectively. In an official statement, the FEF revealed, "During a match with his club, Leonardo Campana suffered a hamstring injury. Consequently, he has been removed from the call-up for this FIFA date. The medical team will continue to monitor his recovery closely."
As of now, the federation has confirmed that several players have joined the national team, including Jordy Alcívar, John Mercado, Hernán Galíndez, Jackson Porozo, Jordy Caicedo, and Leonardo Realpe. More players are expected to be added to the roster throughout the day, indicating a proactive approach by the coaching staff to fill the void left by Campana's injury.
In a strategic move, Elias Legendre, a young Ecuadorian player currently playing in France, has been called up to take Campana's place in the national team.
