The Ecuadorian Foreign Minister, Gabriela Sommerfeld, announced on May 19 that the government has identified a candidate to replace Pablo Zambrano as the ambassador in Washington. However, she clarified that this transition is contingent upon receiving the official approval from the United States government.
Pablo Zambrano tendered his resignation from the ambassadorship on April 22, after serving for over a year. In an interview with Ecuavisa, Sommerfeld explained that Zambrano's departure was prompted by health issues and confirmed that he had informed President Daniel Noboa of his decision well in advance.
"Ambassador Pablo Zambrano experienced health challenges and communicated his intention to retire to the president two months prior to his resignation," the foreign minister stated. She further indicated that Ecuador has already verbally communicated the name of the new candidate to the U.S. government, with a formal request for diplomatic approval expected to be submitted in the coming days.
Sommerfeld emphasized that this procedure is standard protocol in international relations, where the receiving country must conduct a review before officially approving the appointment. "It is important to mention that these processes can take time because the other country needs to conduct an analysis," she explained.
Until the formal approval and the new ambassador's assumption of duty are finalized, the Ecuadorian embassy in Washington will continue to function through its usual administrative and diplomatic channels.
