Nilson Angulo, who plays for Sunderland, sustained an injury during a training session on March 14, 2026, which has resulted in his absence for the Ecuadorian national team's upcoming friendly matches against Morocco and the Netherlands. The head coach of Sunderland, Régis Le Bris, confirmed that Angulo will be sidelined for approximately four to six weeks due to the injury. In an interview regarding the Premier League team selection, Le Bris stated, "(Angulo) suffered an injury during a training session... he will be out for four to six weeks." This news comes as a significant blow to the Ecuador national team, also known as La Tri, as they prepare for crucial matches that will serve as preparation for the upcoming 2026 World Cup.

At only 22 years old, Angulo made his way to Sunderland in February 2026 from the Belgian club Anderlecht. Since his arrival, he has participated in six matches for the English side and has also represented Ecuador in 12 appearances, scoring one goal. The Ecuadorian team is set to face Morocco on March 27 in Madrid and the Netherlands on March 31 in Eindhoven. These friendlies are pivotal for head coach Sebastián Beccacece as he strategizes for the World Cup ahead.
